Liverpool artist David Jacques was the winner of the Fire Station artist in the community studio award in 2003.
Inspired by a similar project completed in Liverpool entitled ‘ As if in a dream, dreamt by another’ during his residency David explored the concept of migration particular to Dublin city. The end result was twelve banners containing life size portraits of various people who either arrived in Dublin or left for foreign shores over the past forty years. These portraits were derived form the standard ‘old family’ photo.
Each banner also contained a passage of text transcribed form a taped conversation held with the owner of the relevant photograph. The owner, often a son or daughter, reflected on that person’s experience of coming to Ireland, difficulties encountered etc. Seven of the banners relate to the experience of people who arrived in Dublin from abroad and settled here: Iran, China, Holland, Poland, Hungary, Senegal, and Zambia. the other five relate to the experience of Irish people who migrated internally to Dublin or left Dublin fro foreign shores; the aim being to show that migration is not just a recent phenomenon to Ireland, but has affected us all to some degree, throughout the years.
This show opened in Temple Bar Gallery and Studios in 04 and was exhibited in Triskel in Cork and The Model in Sligo in 2004 and 05. An accompanying publication with resource pack for Teachers accompanied this show.
