Streets
Ciara O'Malley and Sven Anderson, 2005
A outdoor responsive video and sound installation created by the artists Ciara O'Malley and Sven Anderson in collaboration with residents from the community of Dublin’s North Inner City.
Located at the Luas Stop at Connolly Station in Dublin 1, Streets presents a multifaceted narrative of stories about the North Inner City to a diverse audience of tourists, commuters, and passersby, as well as to the adjacent local community whose collective voice, history and traditions the artwork seeks to represent.
The night time installation designed and programmed by Sven Anderson is comprised of two large-scale video projections and an immersive sound environment, both integrated into the tram station’s unique, open architecture. The installation’s visual content combines drawings, collages, photographs, paintings, videos and text pieces contributed by 27 participating community groups and 21 individuals, while the sound environment is composed from field recordings that capture the urban sounds that permeate the station. Both the installation’s visual and aural components are generated in real-time from a software system that responds to the sound of traffic passing on the street adjacent to the station, linking the installation’s output to the dynamics of its urban location.
The installation reflects the ever-changing urban landscape of the North Inner City. Using a collective community voice, the piece expresses the hopes, dreams and aspirations of the local community. Participation by local people took place during the artist Ciara O’Malley’s ‘Studio Award’ residency in the local Fire Station Artists’ Studios which resulted in the publication ‘Streets: Past, Present and Future’.
Bringing this installation to fruition was a lengthy and complex process involving collaboration between the artists, audio-visual technologists, and a team of staff from the Railway Procurement Agency ( RPA). It was launched in April 2009 and is currently running – during evening hours.
