Maria Maarbjerg (b. 1986) is a visual artist based in Dublin. Working primarily with analogue photography, sound and text, her practice revolves around questions of national identity, the swift societal changes happening in Ireland and her Scandinavian cultural heritage. Recently she has mainly focused on Ireland’s housing crisis. Her photos favours a nostalgic expression, with a formal concern with shapes, lines and textures, and is characterised by an archival and retrospective style.
Maarbjerg is a former student from Fatamorgana The Danish School of Art Photography, and holds a Bachelor (hons.) in Fine Art from Technological University Dublin.
She received an RDS Visual Art Award in 2020 and the Digital Media Graduate Award in Fire Station Artists’ Studios. She was the recipient of A4 Sounds Studio’s We Only Want the Earth Residency in 2021. Recent exhibitions includes Next to None (A4 Sounds Gallery, 2021) and ode to changes (RHA, 2021).
