Create & Fire Station Artists’ Studios Residency Award 2023

The Create and FSAS Artist Residency 2023 offers a focused professional development opportunity that supports and nurtures the arts practice of a professional artist who is interested in developing or consolidating their collaborative/ socially engaged arts practice.

Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios invite expressions of interest from collaborative socially engaged artists who are from a minority ethnic background, have first-hand experience of displacement and/or are shaped by histories of intergenerational migration.  For this residency, candidates may self-identify as Traveller, Roma, refugee, migrant or otherwise through lived experience and/or second generational memories. The Residency will run during the month of June, offering opportunities for development of practice, discussion, networking, and learning.

The residency is funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Artist in the Community Scheme managed by Create, and the Fire Station Artists’ Studios funded through the Visual Arts Department of the Arts Council of Ireland.  The award is delivered through a Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios partnership.

The Deadline for Expressions of Interest is the 17th April 2023, 5 PM.

What does this award offer?

• This award offers support with navigating Irish arts funding networks, building a confident approach to living and working as an artist in Ireland, and curatorial advice and recommendations. It is a supportive future-looking opportunity to engage with Irish visual arts worlds, and to progress techniques and methodologies in collaborative/ socially engaged practice.
• In 2023, the Residency will take place over four weeks in June, based in Dublin’s FSAS, one of Ireland’s key residency and resource centres for Visual Arts. This residency will reinstate its residential element, offering time and space to the selected artist. The allocated space is not suitable for more than 1 person as a live/work space. As a residential provider, accommodation in FSAS is the major part of the award and taking this element up is both a condition of the award and its major advantage.  Accommodation at FSAS includes a studio space with an open plan kitchen/living area, a partitioned off bedroom, and a private bathroom. This is not a wet space but has capacity for desk based work. Access to the facilities at FSAS is possible (subject to availability), this includes sculpture facilities, digital media resources, and curatorial advice or a combination of these elements.
• A stipend of €1,200 is offered with an additional budget for agreed expenses associated with the residency, for example equipment, materials, travel to and from Residency.
• The successful applicant will meet both Create and FSAS ahead of the residency in an initial development phase over 1-2 days to discuss in more detail how the opportunity can be best tailored to the artist’s needs and to consider the supports and logistics on offer.
