Event: Curator Talk with Ilari Laamanen, Thursday 7 March @ 5pm
22 February, 2024
With a background in media studies, independent curator Ilari Laamanen contemplates on the myriad modes of communication in hyperconnected culture. This talk will be an introduction to his curatorial practice that can be situated in the expanded field of photography. He is especially motivated to examine photography’s kinship with other artforms and visual culture at large, not excluding (or being limited to) the rapid developments in artificial intelligence. The main emphasis will be on presenting and reflecting on Trance, the main exhibition of the 7th Tallinn Photomonth Contemporary Art Biennial, which he curated last year.
Ilari Laamanen is an independent curator currently based in Helsinki, Finland. Through his interdisciplinary projects he explores, questions and expands modes of communication and perception in a technologically driven world. Curated exhibitions include Trance, the main exhibition of the 7th Tallinn Photomonth contemporary art Biennial in Tallinn, Estonia 2023 and Alienation, the 9th Momentum Biennial in Moss, Norway in 2017. He worked as the Director of Programs at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (2013–2020), where he cofounded the MOBIUS Fellowship Program and edited four publications, such as Crossroads – New Views on Art and Environment (2019).
