Open Call: Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios Remote Residency Award 2022

Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios (FSAS) are delighted to offer an Artist Residency Award, inviting expressions of interest from collaborative socially engaged artists who are from a minority ethnic background, have first-hand experience of displacement and/or are shaped by histories of intergenerational migration.  For this residency, candidates may self-identify as Traveller, Roma, refugee, migrant or otherwise through lived experience and/or second generational memories.

In 2022, the Residency will take place remotely over four weeks between June and July, with some key meetings held in person. The Create and FSAS Residency offers a focused professional development opportunity that supports and nurtures the arts practice of a professional artist who is interested in developing or consolidating their collaborative/ socially engaged arts practice. Expressions of Interest must be received by 5pm on the 11th April 2022.

The residency is funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create, and the Fire Station Artists’ Studios, which is funded through the Visual Arts Department of the Arts Council of Ireland.  The award is delivered through a partnership between Create and Fire Station Artists’ Studios.

About the award

This award focuses on capacity building and artistic practice development.  The residency operates as an experimental incubator, providing opportunity for the awarded artist to explore and develop their collaborative /socially engaged practice via discussion, networking, learning/unlearning and research to generate new ideas and perspectives. Please note this is not a production residency for projects.

The residency provides the selected artist with time and resources to work with Create and FSAS via mentoring, to focus on areas of their practice that reward heightened reflection and focused critical, rigorous discussion and feedback across a range of elements in an artist’s practice.

It is aimed at an artist whose work lies in the field of the visual arts* & collaborative / socially engaged arts practice, and will:

• provide opportunity for the selected artist to develop and/or consolidate their collaborative arts practice
• support the selected artist to network and engage with the wider field of collaborative and socially engaged arts

What the award offers

The award offers mentoring tailored to the needs of the selected artist.  This will combine support with technical elements of navigating the Irish arts funding networks, with a view to building confidence in planning and creating a structured approach to living and working as an artist in Ireland, as well as curatorial advice and recommendations. This residency is a supportive future-looking opportunity to engage with the Irish visual arts world, as well as to progress techniques and methodologies in collaborative / socially engaged practice.

A stipend is offered and agreed expenses covered, which may also include equipment. The successful applicant will meet both Create and FSAS ahead of the residency in an initial development phase over 1-2 days to discuss in more detail how the opportunity can be best tailored to the artist’s needs and to consider additional supports and logistics in terms of working remotely.

Applicant Support

We have increased supports to remove barriers for artist applicants to Artist in the Community awards. These additional supports may include: translation from other languages, Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpretation for advisory sessions, or transcription of audio and video files.
